How to verify these licenses yourself

The Florida Department of Financial Services publishes a public licensee search. Anyone can look up any public adjuster in the state, see the license status, and see whether there is disciplinary history. Here is how.

1. Go to the Florida DFS Licensee Search: licenseesearch.fldfs.com
2. Choose to search by license number, or by last name.
3. Enter W482618 for James Coyne, or G350978 for the firm.
4. Confirm the license shows as current, and confirm the license type reads "Public Adjuster." A company adjuster or independent adjuster license is not the same thing, and those adjusters work for the insurance company, not for you.

What the license type actually means

Florida licenses three different kinds of property adjusters, and the difference decides who the adjuster works for.

A company adjuster is employed by the insurance carrier. An independent adjuster is hired by the carrier on contract. Both of them represent the insurance company's interest in your claim. A public adjuster is the only one of the three who is licensed to represent you, the policyholder. That is the license CCG holds.

Questions worth asking any public adjuster

Before signing anything with any firm, including this one, ask these. A licensed professional will answer all five without hesitating.

• What is your Florida public adjuster license number?
• Is your license current, and has it ever been disciplined?
• Who personally handles my claim, and are they licensed?
• Have you handled losses like mine, at this size and property type?
• Will you put the fee agreement in writing before any work starts?
